Dogs move undefeated streak to seven

0

Hillsboro, Kan. – It has been one month and a day since McPherson College men’s soccer last suffered defeat.  Since then, they’ve gone 5-0-2 and sit tied atop the KCAC at 5-0-1 with just three matches to play.  The latest Bulldog victim was Tabor College who lost to Mac 2-0 in Hillsboro on Wednesday night.

“We played some of the best soccer we have played all year long in the first half,” said Coach Quint.  “They took everything from the training pitch and put it into the game tonight.  That first goal we scored was beautiful; three consecutive one touch passes with a one touch finish, it was a lot of fun to watch. The second half we got out of character for a bit and I must give credit to Tabor for that. It was a solid performance all around though and that second goal was an amazing strike by Ndongo.”

MC got it going early as they scored just 19 seconds into the match when Kevin Ndongo hit Alex Ronneburg for the first goal of the night; it’s not the quickest goal in McPherson history as that belongs to John White who got one in 13 seconds after kickoff in 2003.  The Bulldogs continued to bombard the TC goal as they took 12 shots in the opening period; they were only able to put two on frame and went into half up 1-0.  In the second, things leveled out and it was a more balanced match.  Things got a bit chippy as both teams recorded numerous fouls in the final 45.  Mac scored in the 69th minute as Kevin Aka found Ndongo to give the ‘Dogs the 2-0 victory.

MC tallied 16 shots for the night; Ndongo took a team-high four shots but had just the one on frame.  Ronneburg, Nick Torres, and Oscar Cortez each had three attempts at goal with all of Ronneburg’s making it between the pipes.

McPherson’s freshman goalie Tanner Horton recorded the shutout as he logged six saves in his 90 minutes of action in the box.

October 25th is when the MC will play again; the ‘Dogs stay on the road as they travel to Sterling College for a 3:00 p.m. (CT) match with the Warriors.

Educators in Olpe, Hartford, Reading and surroundings areas invited to participate

PRATT – Kansas Department of Wildlife Parks and Tourism staff and National Archery in the Schools Program (NASP) training instructors will host a NASP Basic Archery Instructor’s Workshop at the Olpe High School gym, October 27 at 8:30 a.m. Instructors from Olpe, Hartford, Reading, and surrounding areas are invited to participate in the one-day event to become trained and certified as NASP Archery Instructors.

Kansas entered NASP in 2006 and has since introduced the program to students in grades 4-12 at nearly 220 schools around the state. NASP allows students who might not otherwise engage in traditional sports to participate in an activity that can serve as a life-long pursuit. Apart from participating in school programs, student archers can also compete in state and national tournaments held each year, winning medals, and top scoring archers winning prizes ranging from brand new bows to academic scholarships.

Vehicle insurance fraud case supported with KID assistance

0

TOPEKA, Kan. — Thanks to assistance from the Kansas Insurance Department (KID) Anti-Fraud and Legal Divisions, a Garden City man was sentenced to probation and ordered to pay $20,000 in restitution for insurance fraud involving wrecked vehicles.

The Ford County District Court late last month sentenced Eric Alan Hansen, a former insurance adjuster, to repay the money to Farm Bureau Insurance because vehicles he reported as totaled and  retained by the owners were actually sold by Hansen to a local body shop.

The KID Anti-Fraud Division, upon receiving a request from the Dodge City Police Department, convened a meeting of personnel from KID, Farm Bureau investigators, the Kansas Attorney General’s office and the Kansas Department of Revenue. Later, the Ford County attorney filed charges, and Brenda Clary, an attorney with KID, was appointed special prosecutor for the case.

Hansen worked for Farm Bureau as an adjuster in Ford and Finney counties. According to the investigative reports, one of the tactics he used involved paying claims to vehicle policyholders on total losses.  He would then obtain the title from the insured/claimant and report to Farm Bureau that the car was owner-retained as part of the settlement.

He kept the titles and took vehicles to a local body shop where he would receive a “finder’s fee” from the body shop owner, who then restored the vehicles and sold them. The activities occurred from 2007 to 2010.

A total of 10 vehicles were identified in the complaint, including a semi-tractor, cars and pickups.

In addition to the repayment, Hansen was sentenced to 20 months in jail, but he was placed on 24 month’s probation in place of incarceration as part of a plea agreement.

“This resolution is a great example of local and state cooperation in fighting fraud,” said Sandy Praeger, Commissioner of Insurance. “Insurance department personnel are always ready to do whatever they can to protect consumers from activities such as this.”
